Understanding Humanity as Energy: Inside Nikola Tesla’s Vision for the Future

In June 1900, The Century Magazine published a landmark essay titled "The Problem of Increasing Human Energy" by inventor and electrical pioneer Nikola Tesla.

Fresh off groundbreaking electrical experiments in Colorado Springs, Tesla did not merely write a technical summary of his inventions. Instead, he crafted a bold philosophical framework for the future of human civilization, viewing human society not just through history or politics, but through the fundamental laws of physics.

Humanity as a Machine

Tesla proposed viewing the collective human race as a physical mass propelled through space by energy. In physics terms:

  • Mass (M): The total human population and its collective potential.
  • Motivating Force (f): The positive energy propelling us forward (innovation, knowledge, health, and peace).
  • Retarding Force (R): The friction holding us back (ignorance, disease, poverty, and war).

To advance human civilization, Tesla argued that we must apply mechanical principles to elevate this collective energy.

The Three Steps to Elevate Human Civilization

Tesla outlined three specific ways to systematically increase human energy:

1. Increase Human Mass

How: Improve public health, clean water access, and nutritional efficiency.

Insight: Tesla advocated strongly for plant-focused diets and efficient agricultural practices, noting that harvesting plants directly provides far more energy to society than raising livestock.

2. Reduce Retarding Forces

How: Eliminate war, ignorance, and disease.

Insight: Tesla viewed war as the greatest waste of human capacity. He predicted that technology would eventually replace human soldiers with automated machines, rendering traditional warfare obsolete through automated defense systems.

3. Increase Motivating Forces

How: Harness external energy sources provided by the sun and nature.

Insight: Society must move away from burning finite fossil fuels like coal and wood, shifting instead to sustainable solar, wind, and ambient natural currents.

Key Technological Breakthroughs Foreseen

In the essay, Tesla linked his theoretical vision directly to practical engineering concepts that were far ahead of his time:

  • Solar Energy: Championing solar power as the ultimate long-term energy solution for planet Earth.
  • Lightweight Materials: Identifying aluminum as a revolutionary material for transport and infrastructure due to its strength-to-weight ratio and conductivity.
  • Global Wireless Communication & Energy: Outlining plans to transmit information and power through the Earth without wires, unifying global communication and giving every region access to clean energy.

Why It Matters Today

Written at the turn of the 20th century, Tesla’s essay anticipated major modern challenges and solutions:
