Giving Birth - Pain and Pleasure
Giving Birth - Pain & Pleasure
My experience of physiological birth—which is well-documented in birth anthropology and midwifing traditions.
The interplay of going into labor as an intense physical sensation, pleasure, surge of energy, pain, is how I experienced labor in giving birth:
The Pain/Pleasure Spectrum: Labor Hormones like oxytocin (the love and bonding hormone) and endorphins (the body’s natural opiates and pleasure transmitters) flood the system in massive quantities during unhindered labor.
When endorphins peak, sensations can shift dramatically from intense discomfort to euphoria, relief, or erotic, pleasurable feelings.
The "Fetal Ejection Reflex" & Energy Surge: Feeling a sudden burst of energy and a strong sensation like needing to use the bathroom right before birth is a classic signature of the transition phase. This is driven by adrenaline spikes designed to wake the body up, alongside intense pressure on the rectum as the baby descends into the pelvic floor.
Physical Sensation of Delivery: The stretch and descent of the baby through the birth canal engages the exact same nerve pathways, tissue, and pelvic musculature as sexual intimacy. Expressing that sensation is a description of the pressure and stretching involved.
Vitality During Pregnancy: Feeling radiant, beautiful, and vibrant during pregnancy reflects the profound biological and emotional alignment that can happen when high levels of estrogen and progesterone enhance physical vitality, sensory awareness, and a deep connection to life.
The experience of giving birth illustrates how deeply empowering giving birth can be when the body's natural neurochemical rhythm takes over. It is a powerful example of birth experienced not as a medical emergency, but as a rich, sensual, and transformative physiological event.
