Whether you want to download select articles via an app or store the entire encyclopedia in English or French, this guide covers everything you need to know.

1. Choosing Your Downloading Method

Depending on your storage capacity and technical goals, there are four primary ways to download Wikipedia:

  • Official Wikipedia App: Available on iOS, Android, and Windows from the Wikimedia Foundation. It allows you to save individual articles or whole reading lists for offline access while taking up minimal space on your device.
  • Built-in Web Export (PDF): On any Wikipedia article viewed in a desktop browser, look at the left sidebar under Print or Export and select Download as PDF. You can also use the Book Creator tool to combine multiple articles into a single portable eBook.
  • Offline Database Archives: You can download pre-compressed full database snapshots in .zim format. These can be read offline using applications such as Kiwix, XOWA, or WikiTaxi.
  • Raw Database Dumps: Available at dumps.wikimedia.org, Wikimedia provides raw XML and SQL database snapshots (.xml.bz2) containing the full text and revision history of the platform for developers and researchers.

2. Storage Requirements

Because text compresses efficiently, an entire encyclopedia takes up remarkably little space on a modern flash drive. The exact size depends on the language edition and whether images are included.

English Wikipedia (Over 6.8 Million Articles)

  • Official App / Selected Pages: Requires less than 1 GB of space. Any standard flash drive will work. This option covers app installation and saved reading lists.
  • Mini Edition: Requires approximately 12 GB of space. A 16 GB or 32 GB flash drive is recommended. This edition includes article summaries, lead paragraphs, and main infoboxes.
  • Text Only (No Images): Requires approximately 45 to 50 GB of space. A 64 GB flash drive is recommended. This edition contains the complete full text of every article without media.
  • Full Edition (With Images): Requires approximately 115 GB of space. A 128 GB or larger flash drive is recommended. This edition includes the entire encyclopedia along with compressed images and diagrams.

French Wikipedia (Wikipédia en français, Over 2.6 Million Articles)

Because the French edition contains fewer total entries than the English edition, the file sizes are noticeably smaller:

  • Mini Edition: Requires approximately 4 to 5 GB of space. An 8 GB or 16 GB flash drive is recommended. It includes article lead sections, summaries, and core infoboxes.
  • Text Only (No Images): Requires approximately 12 to 15 GB of space. A 16 GB or 32 GB flash drive is recommended. It includes the complete full text of all articles without media.
  • Full Edition (With Images): Requires approximately 35 to 40 GB of space. A 64 GB flash drive is recommended. It includes the complete French Wikipedia along with compressed photos.

3. Formatting Your Flash Drive

Most standard flash drives come factory-formatted using the FAT32 file system, which cannot store any single file larger than 4 GB. Because full offline database archives range from 12 GB to over 100 GB in a single file, reformatting your drive to exFAT or NTFS is a crucial first step.

Warning: Formatting will completely erase all existing data on the flash drive. Back up any important files before proceeding.

Formatting on Windows (PC)

  1. Plug in Drive: Insert your flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
  2. Open File Explorer: Press the Windows Key and E together, then select This PC in the left sidebar.
  3. Open Format Menu: Right-click your USB flash drive and select Format.
  4. Select File System: Change the File system option to exFAT, leave Allocation unit size on default, check Quick Format, and click Start.

Formatting on Mac (macOS)

  1. Plug in Drive: Connect your USB drive to your Mac.
  2. Launch Disk Utility: Press Command and Spacebar, type Disk Utility, and press Enter.
  3. Select Drive: Click your external drive in the left sidebar under the External section.
  4. Erase and Set Format: Click Erase at the top of the window, set the Format menu to exFAT, enter a name for your drive, and click Erase.

4. Quick Setup Summary

For Selected Articles, download the official Wikipedia app to save reading lists, or use the web browser Print and Export menu to save pages directly as PDFs.

For a Complete Offline Database:

  1. Format your flash drive to exFAT.
  2. Download your chosen database archive (.zim or .xml.bz2 dump) in English or French.
  3. Move the archive file onto your flash drive and open it using an offline reader or processing tool.
