 The Intelligence Trap 

David Robson’s The Intelligence Trap and Daniel Kahneman’s landmark work in Thinking, Fast and Slow both examine how human judgment breaks down, but they approach cognitive errors from different angles, targeting different mechanisms and populations.

​Key Similarities

  • Shared Foundation in Behavioral Science: Both authors agree that human minds rely on mental shortcuts (heuristics) that routinely lead to systematic errors in logic, estimation, and decision-making.
  • The Fallibility of Expertise: Both Kahneman and Robson highlight that formal training and domain experience do not guarantee immunity from bias. Experts in both books frequently suffer from overconfidence, anchoring, and a failure to account for unknown variables.
  • Critique of Pure Rationality: Both works reject the classic economic assumption that humans naturally operate as rational actors, demonstrating that emotional states, unconscious biases, and cognitive shortcuts heavily skew real-world outcomes.

​Core Differences

​Primary Scope: Daniel Kahneman focuses on universal human cognitive architecture and how everyone thinks, whereas David Robson targets the specific cognitive vulnerabilities of high-IQ and highly educated individuals.  

​Core Mechanism: Kahneman centers his analysis on System 1 vs. System 2, where System 1 (fast and intuitive) causes automatic errors while System 2 (slow and analytical) acts lazily and fails to double-check those errors. In contrast, Robson describes a Weaponized System 2, where high intelligence gives individuals the analytical horsepower to construct sophisticated rationalizations for their initial intuitive errors.
  
​Role of High IQ: In Kahneman's model, a strong System 2 helps compute complex logic, though it remains susceptible to universal heuristics like availability or framing. In Robson's model, a strong System 2 actively increases cognitive biases like Motivated Reasoning and the Bias Blind Spot, meaning high IQ can make people worse at self-correction.  

​Central Diagnosis: Kahneman diagnoses cognitive biases as hardwired evolutionary traits inherent to human brain architecture. Robson diagnoses the problem as dysrationalia and earned dogmatism, which severs raw cognitive capacity from real-world rationality.  

​Primary Solution: Kahneman advocates for systemic processes, institutional guardrails, and statistical awareness, noting that individuals rarely catch their own System 1 errors. Robson emphasizes Evidence-Based Wisdom, encouraging individuals to cultivate traits like intellectual humility, self-distancing ("Solomon's Trick"), and somatic awareness.  

Complementary Perspectives

​Rather than contradicting one another, Robson's work builds upon Kahneman's foundation:
​Kahneman explains why our initial, intuitive reaction (System 1) gets things wrong in the first place.

​Robson explains what happens next when a smart person experiences that intuitive error: instead of System 2 correcting the mistake, the person uses their superior intelligence to defend, rationalize, and solidify the error.

​While Kahneman shows that everyone is prone to thinking fast, Robson demonstrates that thinking harder doesn't automatically mean thinking better.
