The Case of the Missing History: A WikiExplorers Mission

The afternoon sun streamed through the grand windows of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. Inside, surrounded by rows of tall oak bookshelves and the quiet rustle of old manuscripts, the WikiExplorers gathered around a large wooden table.

At the head of the table stood Ms. Rivers, holding a brightly glowing tablet and a folder filled with yellowed newspaper clippings.

The Assignment

"Explorers," Ms. Rivers said, gathering everyone's attention. "Today we have a very important mission. History isn't just something written in old books long ago—it's happening right now, and it's up to us to make sure the world knows the truth."

She tapped her screen and brought up a Wikipedia article titled Russell City, California.

"Who remembers what we learned about Russell City?" Ms. Rivers asked.

Maya raised her hand immediately. "It was a community in the East Bay where Black and Latino families built their own homes, started their own fire department, and created amazing West Coast blues music!"

"Spot on, Maya," Ms. Rivers smiled. "And what happened in the 1960s?"

"The city leaders took their land to build industrial parks and made everyone leave," added Marcus quietly.

"That's right," Ms. Rivers nodded. "For a long time, that was where the story ended in many history books. But just this month—in August 2026—a landmark decision was made. Local government leaders approved over $1.3 million in reparations and redress funds for the families and descendants whose homes were destroyed."

She tapped the table. "Our assignment today is to find reliable sources—news reports, official county records, and historical archives right here in the Schomburg—to update the Wikipedia page so the world knows about this new chapter of justice."

The Research Quest

Ms. Rivers divided the young WikiExplorers into research teams, giving each group a specific clue to investigate:

Team 1: Searching the Digital Archives

Goal: Find verified news articles about the August 2026 decision

Maya and Sam logged into the research database. They typed in keywords like "Russell City" and "August 2026 reparations". Within minutes, Maya found verified news reports confirming the Alameda County Board of Supervisors' vote.

Team 2: Verifying the Facts

Goal: Double-check numbers, dates, and official quotes

Marcus and Leo cross-referenced the news stories with official meeting records. They confirmed the exact amount—approximately $1.3 to $1.4 million—and made sure the date and details matched perfectly across multiple independent sources.

Team 3: Drafting the Citation & Text

Goal: Write clear, neutral sentences with proper Wikipedia citations

Together with Ms. Rivers, the team drafted a clear paragraph explaining the August 2026 ruling, carefully adding footnote links back to their trusted sources.
