Chelsey Roebuck is an American engineer, social entrepreneur, and STEM educator. He is the co-founder of Emerging Leaders in Technology and Engineering, Inc. (ELiTE), an organization that uses science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education to expand educational and career opportunities for young people from communities underrepresented in STEM fields.

Roebuck's work has included STEM education programs in the United States, Ghana, Tanzania, Jamaica, and Mexico. He has also been involved in educational technology initiatives designed to increase access to digital learning in emerging markets. He was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in education in 2016 and was a 2013 Echoing Green Black Male Achievement Fellow. [1][2]

Early life and education

Roebuck attended Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia, graduating in 2006. He subsequently attended Howard University, where he studied mechanical engineering, before transferring to Columbia University.

He graduated from Columbia University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. While at Columbia, Roebuck was involved with the National Society of Black Engineers and Engineers Without Borders. [1][3]

STEM education

Roebuck's interest in STEM education was significantly influenced by a 2009 trip to Ghana with fellow Columbia Engineering students. During the trip, the students organized a hands-on educational program focused on science, engineering, and sustainable technologies.

The program grew from an initial project into a broader educational initiative. Roebuck and his colleagues subsequently developed programs providing practical STEM instruction to students in communities with limited access to science and technology resources. [1][2]

Emerging Leaders in Technology and Engineering

In 2011, Roebuck and his colleagues launched Emerging Leaders in Technology and Engineering (ELiTE). The organization was established to expand access to STEM education and help young people develop the skills, networks, and confidence necessary to pursue STEM-related educational and professional opportunities.

ELiTE's programs have included computer science, robotics, software development, ecology, astronomy, and other hands-on STEM activities. Its programs have operated in communities in the United States and internationally.

Early ELiTE programs developed in Ghana and subsequently expanded to Tanzania, Jamaica, and Mexico. The organization's approach combined classroom instruction with summer programs, workshops, mentoring, and other experiential learning opportunities. [1][2]

Roebuck has emphasized the importance of understanding the communities in which educational programs operate and of providing students with practical experiences rather than relying exclusively on conventional classroom instruction. [1]

Work in Harlem

Following his graduation from Columbia, Roebuck worked in Harlem, including with the Abyssinian Development Corporation and the Columbia University School of Social Work.

His work included coordinating programs intended to improve educational outcomes for young people. His experiences in Harlem contributed to his interest in using STEM education as a means of addressing educational inequality and expanding economic opportunities. [2]

ELiTE subsequently developed STEM programming in New York City, including programs serving students in Harlem. Columbia Engineering reported that the organization had provided STEM and computer science opportunities to thousands of young people in New York City, Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. [3]

Educational technology

Roebuck has also been involved in educational technology. He was a co-founder and advisor associated with dotLearn, a digital education initiative intended to make online educational resources more accessible in emerging markets.

The initiative focused particularly on reducing technological and connectivity barriers to digital learning. Roebuck's involvement reflected his broader interest in combining engineering and technology with educational access. [4]

International work

Roebuck's educational work has maintained a strong international dimension.

ELiTE's early programs in Ghana became a model for subsequent programs in other countries. Workshops and educational activities were conducted in Tanzania, Jamaica, and Mexico, covering subjects including robotics, software development, ecology, astronomy, and other areas of STEM. [2]

Awards and recognition

In 2013, Roebuck was selected as an Echoing Green Black Male Achievement Fellow. Echoing Green described his organization's goal as expanding career opportunities for Black men and boys through hands-on STEM education and professional networks. [2]

In 2016, Roebuck was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the education category. Columbia Engineering reported that the recognition highlighted his work with ELiTE and its efforts to increase access to STEM education. [1][3]

Roebuck was also a recipient of the Evelyn Kamen Rising Star Award, an honor associated with the FIRST robotics community. He received the award alongside former United States president Barack Obama. [5]
