​The memory of Nigerian environmental giant Ken Saro-Wiwa lives on vibrantly in the heart of Paris. Named in his honor, the Centre Paris Anim' Ken Saro-Wiwa stands as a testament to the global impact of his fight for environmental and human rights.

​The History Behind the Name

​Ken Saro-Wiwa (1941–1995) was a world-renowned author, television producer, and president of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP). In the early 1990s, he led a massive, non-violent movement against the catastrophic environmental destruction of Ogoniland in the Niger Delta, caused by decades of reckless crude oil extraction by multinational corporations.

​Because of his fearless activism and his ability to draw international media attention to the plight of his people, he was targeted by the military dictatorship of General Sani Abacha. Despite intense global outcry, Saro-Wiwa and eight of his fellow activists (the Ogoni Nine) were executed in 1995.

​To ensure his sacrifice was never forgotten, the City of Paris named this public cultural facility after him. It reflects his lifelong belief that the arts, education, and community solidarity are the ultimate tools for social progress.
