From Search Results to Knowledge Infrastructure
For more than two decades, Wikipedia has been one of the internet's greatest success stories. Millions of volunteers from around the world have worked together to build a free encyclopedia that anyone can read, edit, and improve.
For much of that time, search engines such as Google served as the front door to Wikipedia. Someone searching for "Harlem Renaissance," "Queen Nzinga," "climate change," or "jazz history" would almost always find a Wikipedia article among the first search results.
People came to Wikipedia to answer a question. Some returned to correct a spelling mistake, add a citation, upload a photograph, or expand an article. In this way, readers became contributors, and contributors became members of the Wikimedia community.
That pathway helped sustain Wikipedia for more than twenty years.
Today, however, the internet is changing.
The Rise of AI as the New Front Door

I believe the opposite is true.

Why Human Editors Matter More Than Ever
As AI-generated content becomes more common, the role of Wikipedia editors becomes even more valuable.
Artificial intelligence can summarize existing knowledge.
