​This is the Centre Paris Anim’ Ken Saro-Wiwa—a public cultural powerhouse that serves as a vital bridge between international environmental history and local grassroots creativity.

​The Story Behind the Name

​To understand the soul of this center, one must understand the man whose name is etched above its doors. Ken Saro-Wiwa was a legendary Nigerian author, television producer, and environmental activist. In the 1990s, he led a non-violent movement against the catastrophic environmental degradation of his homeland—the Ogoni region of the Niger Delta—caused by decades of unregulated crude oil extraction. Tragically, his fight for human rights and ecological justice led to his execution by a military dictatorship in 1995.

​When the City of Paris and the Ligue de l’enseignement (a historic French federation dedicated to popular, inclusive education) opened this modern facility, naming it after Saro-Wiwa was a deliberate political and symbolic statement. Situated in a district renowned for its history of social justice, diverse immigrant populations, and working-class advocacy, the center honors his legacy by educating a new generation of youth to use art and expression as tools for change.

On any given afternoon, you’ll find youth practicing everything from breakdancing and hip-hop choreography to contemporary styles.
  • ​A 110-Seat Theater: The facility includes a versatile, fully equipped performance theater. It hosts regular community plays, experimental local theater productions, independent music concerts, and documentary screenings that focus heavily on climate activism and global civil rights.
  • ​The Sound & Multimedia Studios: Honoring Saro-Wiwa's background as a writer and mass media pioneer, the center features music recording and rehearsal studios, alongside a digital multimedia lab. Here, local youth learn the ropes of music production, podcasting, graphic design, and animation filmmaking.
  • ​Ecology and Popular Education: True to its founding philosophy, the center is a place of learning. It hosts extensive French literacy programs, homework help groups, and participates actively in the national Fête de la Science (Science Festival), making environmental science and tech accessible to children and families.
