 Wikicommons for iPhone

Changing the camera settings is often the most reliable way to avoid errors entirely. Here is a simplified, step-by-step guide you can share to help your friend set up her iPhone for easier uploading.

Step 1: Change the Camera Format

This ensures all future photos are saved as standard JPEGs that Wikimedia Commons recognizes.

  1. Open the Settings app on the iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Camera.
  3. Tap Formats at the top of the menu.
  4. Select Most Compatible.
    • (Note: "High Efficiency" is the default setting that causes the upload errors.)

Step 2: Use the Website (Not the App)

The mobile website is generally more stable for uploads than the standalone app.

  1. Open Safari (or any web browser) on the iPhone.
  2. Go to commons.wikimedia.org.
  3. Log in to the account.
  4. Tap the Upload icon (usually a cloud with an arrow) or use the Upload Wizard.

Step 3: Select and Upload

  1. Tap Select media files to share.
  2. Choose Photo Library from the pop-up menu.
  3. Select the image(s) and tap Add.
  4. Follow the prompts to add the title, description, and license information.

A Quick Tip for Existing Photos

If you have already taken the photos and don't want to retake them:

  • The Email Trick: You can email the photos to herself. When the iPhone asks what size to send, choosing "Large" or "Actual Size" often triggers the phone to convert the file to a JPEG automatically. You can then save that emailed version and upload it.
  • The Screenshot Trick: For a quick fix, taking a screenshot of the photo in her gallery creates a PNG file, which Wikimedia Commons also accepts.
