From J-Town to the World: My Journey to the UN AI Youth Summit 2026
From J-Town to the World: My Journey to the UN AI Youth Summit 2026
April 2026
Standing in the General Assembly hall in New York, thousands of miles away from the familiar cold of the Jos Plateau, I realized something profound: The future of Artificial Intelligence isn’t just being written in Silicon Valley. It’s being written in places like Jos, Nigeria.
As a delegate at this year’s UN Youth Summit on AI, I represented more than just a country; I represented a vision of "J-Town" as a global tech contender. Here is what I learned and why the "Home of Peace and Tourism" is about to become the "Home of AI and Innovation."
1. AI is the New "Green Gold" for Plateau State
One of the most eye-opening sessions was on AI for Sustainable Agriculture. In Jos, we are famous for our potatoes, tomatoes, and exotic vegetables.
I spoke with experts about Edge AI—tools that work without constant internet. Imagine sensors in a farm in Barkin Ladi that use machine learning to detect potato blight weeks before it ruins a harvest. By bringing these global partnerships home, we can move from traditional farming to "Precision Agriculture."
2. Bridging the Gap with "Giga" and UniPods
A major highlight was meeting the team behind the UNICEF Giga initiative. Their goal is to connect every school in the world to the internet.
- The Goal for Jos: To ensure that a student in a rural school in Pankshin has the same access to AI learning tools as a student in New York.
- The UniPod Advantage: I spent time discussing the AI UniPod at the University of Jos. These hubs are the "engine rooms" where we will train the next generation of Nigerian data scientists and ethical AI researchers.
3. Ethics, Security, and Peacebuilding
Coming from Jos, we understand the importance of community and security. At the summit, we tackled the hard questions: How do we use AI for security without losing our privacy?
I advocated for a "Human-Centered AI" approach. We can use AI-enabled data analysis to predict and prevent conflicts, but it must be done ethically. Nigeria is leading the charge in the African Union’s AI Strategy, and our voices from the Middle-Belt are crucial to that conversation.
My Three Big "Take-Homes" for the Jos Tech Scene:
- Stop Competing, Start Collaborating: The world wants to partner with us, but we must be organized. Our tech hubs like nHub and Plateau State ICT Agency are our greatest assets.
- Focus on Local Language Models (LLMs): We need AI that understands Hausa, Berom, and our local nuances. If we don’t build it, no one will.
- Youth-Led Innovation is the Key: The UN doesn’t just want our presence; they want our perspective. We are the users, the builders, and the guardians of this technology.
What’s Next?
I’m returning to Jos not just with a suitcase full of notes, but with a network of global mentors and potential investors. Over the next few months, I’ll be hosting a "UN Summit Debrief" at [Insert Local Hub Name] to share these resources.
The "Cold City" is heating up. Let’s build the future together.
