Dreaming of Old New York City
When Seekers, Teachers, and Dreamers Once Gathered
A Conjurer’s Passage Through Memory, Spirit, and Self
Characters
Samantha — a 70-year-old African American woman, thoughtful, curious, rooted in spirit
The Conjurer — a version of Samantha within the dream, timeless and radiant
Voices of the Past — echoes of seekers, teachers, and everyday people
Scene One: The Quiet Apartment (Future Time)
(A soft blue light hums. The room is simple but filled with books instead of screens. A window shows a distant, glowing city skyline.)
Samantha (sitting in a chair, reading aloud softly):
Seventy-second Street… imagine that. People gathering not for noise… but for knowing.
(She closes the book gently and looks out the window.)
There was a time when New York whispered instead of shouted.
When folks believed thoughts could shape life…
When prayer wasn’t begging—it was becoming.
(Pause)
What did it feel like… to live in a city like that?
(She leans back, eyes heavy.)
Before all these screens… before everything got so loud…
(Dreaming of Old New York City drifts to sleep.)
Scene Two: The Dream Opens
(A low hum becomes a rhythm. The room dissolves. Samantha now stands in a golden-lit street. No cars. People walk slowly, deliberately. There is a softness in the air.)
Samantha (looking around, whispering):
Where… am I?
Voices of the Past (layered, gentle):
You are where thought breathes…
You are where spirit walks the street…
(Samantha looks at her hands—they glow faintly.)
Samantha:
My hands… what is this?
(A figure emerges—it is her, but younger and ageless: The Conjurer.)
Scene Three: Meeting Herself
The Conjurer (smiling):
You’ve always had it. You just forgot to look.
Samantha:
Who are you?
The Conjurer:
I am the part of you that remembers.
The part that knows thought is a tool… and spirit is a place you can live in.
(Samantha steps closer.)
Samantha:
This city… it feels alive. Peaceful. Like everyone knows something.
The Conjurer:
They do. They knew the inner world shapes the outer one.
They gathered, they studied, they imagined… together.
(People pass by—some speaking softly, others in deep thought, some smiling for no reason.)
Samantha:
What happened to it?
(The Conjurer pauses, then gestures upward. A flicker of screens, noise, advertisements fills the sky briefly—then fades.)
The Conjurer:
Attention was taken outward.
The noise grew louder than the knowing.
People stopped visiting themselves.
Scene Four: The Lesson
(The street quiets. Samantha and The Conjurer stand still as if inside a sacred moment.)
The Conjurer:
But nothing was lost. Only forgotten.
(She places a hand over Samantha’s heart.)
The city you’re looking for… is here.
It always was.
Samantha (closing her eyes):
I can feel it… like warmth… like light moving through me…
Voices of the Past (soft, rising):
Think… and become…
Feel… and know…
Be still… and remember…
(Samantha begins to glow brighter.)
Scene Five: Awakening
(The glow intensifies—then suddenly, silence.)
(Samantha wakes up in her chair. Morning light fills the room.)
Samantha (slowly sitting up, touching her chest):
Oh…
(She stands. There is a calmness in her movement now. A quiet confidence.)
Samantha:
It wasn’t just a dream.
(She walks to the window. The city still hums—but she is different.)
Samantha (smiling softly):
They didn’t disappear…
They just went inward.
(She closes her eyes briefly, breathing deeply. A subtle glow seems to surround her.)
Samantha:
And I can go there… anytime.
Final Moment
(She picks up her book—but instead of opening it, she places it down.)
Samantha:
No more just reading about it…
Now I live it.
(Lights fade as she stands in stillness—present, aware, glowing.)
