Preserving the Legacy: The WikiExplorers at the 2025 Kwanzaa Film Festival

HARLEM, NY — As the winter air settles over Lenox Avenue, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture prepares to transform into a global stage for the 2025 Kwanzaa Film Festival. This year, the WikiExplorers have been commissioned for a unique cultural adventure: to document the festival’s filmmakers, the community, and the sacred history of Harlem cinema through a digital lens.

A Vision of Unity: The Director’s Charge

Festival director and organizer Ina Norris stands at the helm of this "Cinematic Renaissance." Her mission for the WikiExplorers is clear—document the living history of the event to ensure it is preserved for future generations on Wikimedia Commons.

“You aren’t just taking pictures; you are capturing a legacy,” Ina explains during a briefing in the Schomburg lobby. “We are in the ‘World’s Library’ of the Black experience. Do you feel that energy?”

Ina’s strategy for the team is built on the principle of Umoja (Unity). She has instructed the explorers to navigate the opening reception by identifying participants through their official badges:

Filmmakers: The primary subjects. They are the modern griots whose work is the heart of the festival.

VIPs: Community leaders and cultural icons who provide the infrastructure for the arts in Harlem.

Volunteers: The embodiment of Ujima (Collective Work), ensuring the festival breathes and functions.

Voices Over the Cosmogram

The centerpiece of the WikiExplorers’ mission takes place in the Langston Hughes Lobby. In a poignant tribute to Harlem’s literary roots, filmmakers will deliver brief talks while standing atop the Cosmogram. This site-specific floor installation marks the final resting place of the legendary poet Langston Hughes, whose ashes are interred beneath the tiles.

"When the filmmakers stand there to speak, they are standing on the shoulders of a giant," says Ina. "I want you to capture that connection. Don't just get their faces—get the floor, the light, and the respect in the room."

The WikiExplorer Protocol: Mobile Documentation

Armed with cell phones, the WikiExplorers are tasked with more than just snapshots. To meet the standards of a "Wiki Adventure," the team follows a rigorous documentation protocol:

Contextual Metadata: Every photo includes the filmmaker’s name, film title, and the specific Kwanzaa principle of the day.

Visual Storytelling: Beyond the filmmakers, the team will document the vendors (representing Ujamaa or Cooperative Economics) and the "behind-the-scenes" media presence.

As the 2025 festival kicks off, the WikiExplorers stand ready to prove that "low aim is a crime." Through their lenses, the voices of the Kwanzaa Film Festival will be heard far beyond the walls of Harlem, creating a permanent record of Black excellence in film.

Ina: (Adjusting her scarf, looking over the bustling lobby) "Listen up, WikiExplorers! You aren't just taking pictures; you are capturing a legacy. We are in the Schomburg—the 'World’s Library' of the Black experience. Do you feel that energy?"

Lead WikiExplorer: "We definitely do, Ina. We’ve got our phones ready and the Wiki upload queue set. We’re ready to document."

Ina: "Good. Now, remember the 'Badges of Honor.' If you see a Filmmaker badge, that’s your priority. They are the griots of our time. If you see a VIP badge, that’s our support system. And don't ignore the Volunteers—this festival doesn't breathe without them."

WikiExplorer 2: "We noticed a crowd gathering near the center of the floor, by the blue artwork. Is that where the talks are happening?"

Ina: (Nodding solemnly) "Exactly. That is the Rivers Cosmogram. Langston Hughes’ ashes are right beneath those tiles. When the filmmakers stand there to speak, they are standing on the shoulders of a giant. I want you to capture that connection. Don't just get their faces—get the floor, the light, and the respect in the room."

Lead WikiExplorer: "We’ll make sure to note the location in the metadata. It’s important people know they are speaking over Langston’s resting place."

Ina: "Exactly. There are other photographers here, so don't be shy. Get in there, get the photos, and show the world how Harlem celebrates cinema and Kwanzaa.
