REDES and Ousmane Aly Pame

REDES (Réseau pour l’Émergence et le Développement des Écovillages au Sahel / Network for the Emergence and Development of Ecovillages in the Sahel) is a community-based organization founded in 2015 by Dr. Ousmane Aly Pame, former mayor of Guédé Chantier and president of the Global Ecovillage Network Africa (GEN-Africa).

Its mission is to transform traditional villages in the Sahel region into sustainable ecovillages, especially along the Senegal River between Senegal and Mauritania.

Who is Ousmane Aly Pame?

He holds a PhD in Literature from Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, and later obtained a State Doctorate in 2015.

In 2009, he was elected mayor of Guédé Chantier, a village of about 9,000 people, where he launched a transition toward becoming an eco-municipality.7

Under his leadership, Guédé Chantier became a model ecovillage, integrating:

regenerative agriculture,

sustainable water management,

renewable energy production, and

biodiversity preservation.

REDES as a Community Initiative

REDES grew out of the Guédé Chantier experience and quickly expanded to include more than 100 villages in Senegal and Mauritania.

Its projects include:

creating food forests,

building wells,

promoting organic farming,

waste management, and

community education.

REDES works with local governments, universities, NGOs, and international partners to strengthen local capacities and restore fragile ecosystems in the Sahel.

Pan-African Vision

As president of GEN-Africa (2012–2020), Ousmane Pame advocated for the transformation of traditional villages into ecovillages at the national level.

He even convinced the Senegalese government to adopt this model.

His philosophy is rooted in local knowledge, community resilience, and environmental justice.

He believes Africa should develop according to its own principles, relying on its human and natural resources rather than external models.
