AfroCROWD Heads to Nairobi: Making History at Wikimania 2025

All Roads lead to Nairobi, Kenya

By Linda Dabo

In what is expected to be a landmark event in the Wikimedia movement, AfroCROWD is proud to announce its participation in Wikimania 2025, taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, from August 6–9, with pre-conference events on August 5 .

This year marks a historic milestone: Wikimania 2025 is expected to host the largest number of African participants ever, reflecting a growing momentum of open knowledge on the continent. AfroCROWD—the movement empowering representation of people of African descent across Wikimedia projects—will be at the forefront in Nairobi.

Can’t Travel to Nairobi? No Problem

If you’re unable to attend in person, you can still be part of this historic moment by joining virtually. The conference is fully hybrid, with the virtual experience offering interactive sessions, live keynotes, multilingual interpretation, chat, discussion rooms, and recordings—available for free! A Homecoming of Knowledge

Since its founding in 2015, AfroCROWD has worked tirelessly to bridge the digital knowledge gap—through edit-a-thons, workshops, and training sessions. Our return to Nairobi is more than symbolic; it's a recognition of how far the movement has come and a recommitment to Africa's rich oral traditions, cultural legacies, and lived histories.

Kenya’s capital—Iearningly dubbed the "Silicon Savannah"—serves as a hub for innovation, open data, and youth-driven energy, making it the perfect setting for Wikimania 2025.

What AfroCROWD Will Bring to Wikimania

Panels & and meet-ups led by AfroCROWD on themes like content equity, and diaspora stories.

Collaborative sessions connecting African Wikimedians with Afro-descendant communities across the globe.

Oral history and storytelling initiatives, empowering youth with digital Wikipedia edit training, and how-to use Wikicommons to upload photographs.

Community and cultural exchanges, highlighting that knowledge is more than text—it’s lived, heard, and shared.

History in the Making

A record number of Africans are expected to converge on this conference to shape global knowledge, not just consume it. AfroCROWD’s journey to Nairobi is about creating space, amplifying voices, and ensuring the Wikimedia ecosystem reflects the brilliance of African and Afro-descendant peoples.

We invite open culture allies, knowledge champions, life long learners,  and all AfroCROWD supporters to follow our journey—or to participate virtually. Be a part of this historic global gathering, whether in-person or online.

History is not just made — it is edited. And this time, Africa is at the table.
