New York City has once again secured its status as a global powerhouse, earning the title of Best City in the World for 2025, according to Oxford Economics’ prestigious Global Cities Index. This marks the second year in a row that the city has topped the list, a reflection of its resilience, economic strength, and dynamic urban life.
The Global Cities Index evaluates 1,000 cities worldwide across five critical categories: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance. New York City scored a perfect 100 overall, excelling particularly in the economic category. Analysts credited the city’s robust GDP, high income per capita, and status as home to numerous global corporate headquarters.
Despite its top ranking, the report also pointed out challenges. NYC ranked 168th in governance and 161st in environment, citing issues like economic inequality, low diversity in certain sectors, and the persistent burden of high housing costs.
In addition to this global recognition, New York City also captured domestic praise by being named the top U.S. destination in Tripadvisor’s 2025 Travelers’ Choice Awards. Travelers and reviewers lauded the city for its iconic landmarks, world-class museums, dynamic arts and theater scene, and exceptional culinary diversity.
Adding yet another feather to its cap, NYC was ranked the happiest city in the United States and 17th globally in the 2025 Happy City Index. The ranking evaluates cities based on environmental sustainability, mobility, health, citizen well-being, economy, and governance. New York’s strong performance in cultural vitality, green investment, and innovation contributed to its high placement.
These multiple accolades showcase New York City’s multifaceted identity—not just as a financial and cultural capital, but as a city that continues to evolve, inspire, and lead. Even amid its challenges, the city's ability to adapt and innovate remains unmatched.
As the world watches and visits, New York City stands tall in 2025—not only as a beacon of ambition and diversity but also as a testament to the enduring power of great cities.
