Proposal for Donating Kiwix Flash Drives to Rural Libraries in the Sahel Areas of Senegal and Mauritania

Introduction

During my visit to the Sahel regions of Senegal and Mauritania for the Ecofest, I witnessed the immense challenges faced by rural communities in accessing information and educational resources. One of the most significant barriers is the limited availability of reliable internet, which hinders the learning and development opportunities for many individuals, especially students and community members eager to expand their knowledge.

As part of my commitment to supporting these communities, I propose donating Kiwix flash drives to Redes Rural Libraries and several other Ecofest partner groups. These flash drives, loaded with offline Wikipedia content and other educational resources, will provide invaluable access to knowledge in areas where internet access is either unavailable or unreliable.

Objective

The objective of this donation is to:

1. Provide offline access to educational resources—Including Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikivoyage, and other relevant content—without the need for an internet connection.

2. Enhance learning opportunities for students, teachers, and community members by offering a wide range of information on topics like science, history, health, and technology.

3. Support local libraries and community groups in their efforts to promote education, digital literacy, and information access in rural areas of Senegal and Mauritania.

Why Kiwix for Rural Communities in the Sahel?

Offline Access: Kiwix allows communities to access Wikipedia and other Wikimedia resources offline, using simple devices like a laptop or USB flash drive. This is ideal for areas where internet access is limited or non-existent.

Multilingual Content: Kiwix offers content in multiple languages, including French and other local languages, ensuring that the information is accessible to a wide range of users.

Cost-Effective: Once the Kiwix flash drives are set up, there are no ongoing costs. This makes it a sustainable solution for libraries and community centers that may not have the financial resources for paid subscriptions or internet-based services.

Simple and Easy to Use: Kiwix is easy to install and use, making it accessible for librarians, teachers, and community leaders with limited technical knowledge.

Proposed Donation Plan

1. Kiwix Flash Drives for Redes Rural Libraries: I propose donating X number of flash drives (based on the number of libraries) preloaded with the following content:

Wikipedia (French and English versions)

Wiktionary

Wikivoyage

Wikibooks (educational resources)

Health and Agriculture resources relevant to the Sahel region.

2. Kiwix Flash Drives for Ecofest Partner Groups: In addition to the rural libraries, I propose donating flash drives to community groups that were involved in the Ecofest, such as:

Local environmental and sustainability organizations.

Community schools or educational projects.

Health organizations promoting wellness and education.

3. Training and Support: To ensure that the donated resources are used effectively, I propose providing training for librarians and community leaders on how to use Kiwix and its content. This could include:

Training sessions on Kiwix software and how to navigate the educational content.

Workshops on integrating Kiwix into local education and community development programs.

Expected Impact

Improved Access to Information: Communities will have access to a wealth of knowledge, ranging from educational content to health advice and local news.

Support for Education: Students and teachers can use Kiwix to conduct research and enhance classroom learning, even without the internet.

Digital Literacy: By using Kiwix, local libraries and organizations can build digital literacy skills, empowering communities to use technology for personal and collective growth.

Long-Term Sustainability: This project will continue to benefit communities long after the initial donation, as the resources are freely available and don’t require ongoing internet costs.

Conclusion

Donating Kiwix flash drives to the Redes rural libraries and Ecofest partner groups is a step toward bridging the digital divide in the Sahel region. By providing offline access to Wikipedia and other educational resources, we can help empower individuals and communities with knowledge, enhancing their ability to thrive in an ever-changing world.

I believe that this donation will have a meaningful and lasting impact on the educational landscape in rural Senegal and Mauritania, helping to promote digital literacy, educational equity, and access to information. I look forward to discussing how we can make this project a reality and further support the incredible work already being done in these communities.

Next Steps

Finalize the number of flash drives and content selection.

Coordinate with local partners to ensure proper distribution and training.

Organize a follow-up to assess the impact of the donation and gather feedback for future initiatives.
