The Alliance of Sahel States

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is a confederation formed by Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, established to enhance cooperation in defense, security, and economic matters within the Sahel region. All three member states are currently governed by military juntas following coups between 2020 and 2023. The alliance was formalized on July 6, 2024, during a summit in Niamey, Niger. ​​

Background and Formation

The Sahel region has faced persistent security challenges, including insurgencies by Islamist groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. In response to these threats and following their respective coups, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso sought to strengthen regional collaboration. This led to the creation of the AES, aiming to collectively address security concerns and reduce reliance on external partners. ​​

Objectives and Initiatives

The AES focuses on several key areas:

Defense and Security: The alliance has announced the formation of a joint military force comprising 5,000 troops, equipped with air assets, equipment, and intelligence resources, to combat extremist groups in the central Sahel region. ​​

Economic Integration: Plans include establishing a common central bank and introducing a new currency to replace the CFA franc. The AES also envisions joint infrastructure projects to boost agricultural and energy self-reliance. ​​


Governance and Cooperation: The alliance aims to ensure the free movement of people and goods among member states and has proposed creating a joint investment bank to foster economic development. ​​

International Relations

The formation of the AES marks a shift in the geopolitical landscape of West Africa. The member states have distanced themselves from traditional Western partners, notably France, and have shown an inclination towards strengthening ties with Russia. This realignment reflects a broader trend of seeking alternative partnerships and reducing dependence on former colonial powers. ​​

The AES represents a significant development in the Sahel region's approach to addressing its security and economic challenges. By fostering closer cooperation among member states, the alliance seeks to enhance regional stability and self-reliance.
