Skillshare - Black Farmers Fund!

Exploring Food Education and Sustainability at SARE Skillshare on Institutional and Private Market Access for Black Farmers in NYS. 

On November 12th, Black Farmers Fund hosted a  Skillshare event that brought together individuals passionate about food education, sustainability, and local farming practices. 

This unique gathering functioned as a mini-conference, featuring breakout sessions that allowed participants to engage directly with one another, exchange insights, and discuss collaborative ideas. The event drew attendees interested in promoting knowledge on critical issues like school lunch programs, urban gardens, and the farm-to-table movement.

The purpose of attending this Skillshare was for me to gain perspectives on enhancing Wikipedia content related to food issues, farmers, and community gardening. 

Several breakout sessions offered valuable insights on educational efforts and policies surrounding food sustainability and accessibility, as well as the challenges faced by schools and urban communities in ensuring efficient food use.


One session highlighted the importance of food in school lunch programs, emphasizing both the benefits and challenges these programs face in promoting healthy eating among children.

Conversations addressed the practical difficulties involved in minimizing waste, maintaining efficiency, and ensuring children have access to nutritious meals. 

I discussed the potential for Wikipedia articles to increase public awareness about the importance of food education and the complexities of implementing effective school meal programs.

Other breakout sessions focused on broader food-related issues such as food bills, urban gardens, and the farm-to-table movement.

Participants shared insights into the ways local initiatives, like urban gardening and school gardens, can educate students and communities on where food comes from, encouraging sustainable practices. Many attendees zoom iaw Wikipedia as a powerful platform to disseminate information on these topics, helping to bridge gaps in public understanding.

The event demonstrated  the need for more mini-conferences for knowledge-sharing and encourage collaboration on educational projects. These gatherings not only provide a space to brainstorm and refine content ideas  but also help build a community dedicated to using platforms like Wikipedia to promote sustainable food practices.

Skillshare provided an excellent opportunity for attendees to connect over a shared mission: educating the public about the value of food, supporting sustainability, and helping communities make informed choices about food and resources. 

The conversations and presentations gave me ideas for expanding  content on Wikipedia on crucial topics that affect everyday lives.
