Unity Church's interpretation of the Ten Commandments!

A theatrical monologue based on Unity Church's interpretation of the Ten Commandments:

The Ten Commandments: A Call to Wholeness

(Lights rise on a lone figure standing center stage.)

Speaker

For too long, these commandments have been wielded like a whip, a list of dos and don'ts that stifle our spirit. But what if they were something more? What if they were keys, unlocking the door to a life of wholeness and connection?

(Pause for effect)

Unity Church teaches us to see these principles not as burdens, but as guideposts. They point us towards a path of aligning ourselves with the divine law, the harmonious rhythm of the universe itself.

(Speaker takes a step forward)

Imagine the first commandment, "You shall have no other gods before me," not as a restriction on worship, but as a call to recognize the divine spark within us all. It's about honoring the God-presence in ourselves and others.

(Speaker gestures outward)

The commandments that follow become tools. They help us cultivate this inner divinity. "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image" reminds us not to worship idols, external things that distract us from the true source of our being.

(Speaker walks purposefully across the stage)

"Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain" becomes a call to respectful awareness. Every word we speak holds power. Let us use it to uplift and create.

(Speaker pauses, looking thoughtful)

Each commandment, interpreted through this lens, becomes a stepping stone. "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy" isn't just about one day a week. It's a call to make every day holy, to find moments of peace and connection with the divine.

(Speaker's voice grows in intensity)

By honoring our parents, by not stealing or killing, by not committing adultery or bearing false witness, we cultivate a life of integrity and right action. We become instruments of harmony in a world that often feels discordant.

(Speaker takes a deep breath)

The Ten Commandments, seen through the eyes of Unity Church, are not a rulebook, but a love letter.

They are a call to wholeness, a reminder of the powerful, divine being that resides within each of us. Let us heed this call, not out of fear, but out of love for ourselves and the world we share.

(Lights slowly dim as speaker exits the stage.)
