Chelsey Roebuck: Engineering, STEM Education, and Building Pathways to Opportunity

Chelsey Roebuck is an engineer, educator, entrepreneur, and advocate for greater access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. His career has brought together engineering, youth development, international education, technology, and community empowerment, with important connections between New York City and Africa.

From Engineering to Education

Roebuck's interest in engineering developed early. He attended Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia, where he became involved in robotics and began developing his interest in technology and engineering.

He later studied mechanical engineering at Howard University and Columbia University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia in 2010.

In 2009, while a Columbia Engineering student, Roebuck traveled to Ghana as part of an engineering initiative. He and other students worked with young people, introducing them to hands-on science and sustainable technology.

The experience demonstrated something important to Roebuck: engineering could be much more than a professional career. Engineering could become a tool for community development and empowerment.

The Ghana experience helped inspire the creation of Emerging Leaders in Technology and Engineering (ELiTE).

Building ELiTE

Roebuck became a co-founder and executive director of ELiTE, an organization designed to expand STEM opportunities for young people who have historically had limited access to them.

ELiTE's programs have incorporated areas such as:

Robotics

Computer science

Engineering

Environmental science

Astronomy

Technology

Mentoring

Hands-on experimentation

The organization's work eventually extended beyond Ghana to other countries, including Tanzania, Jamaica, and Mexico, as well as communities in the United States.

The philosophy behind the work was straightforward but powerful: young people should not simply be consumers of technology. They should have opportunities to understand it, build it, experiment with it, and use it to solve problems in their own communities.

Ghana and Harlem

An especially interesting dimension of Roebuck's work is the connection between Ghana and Harlem.

His international experience in Ghana influenced his thinking about STEM education in underserved communities. In New York City, he worked with organizations including the Abyssinian Development Corporation, helping connect young people with educational and developmental opportunities.

Harlem and Ghana therefore became two important locations in a larger educational philosophy: knowledge and technology could move in both directions across communities and continents.

This approach challenges the idea that innovation simply flows from wealthy countries to developing countries. Instead, communities can learn from one another and develop solutions based on their own experiences.

STEM as a Pathway to Empowerment

Roebuck's work received national recognition.

In 2016, he was named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 list in education, recognizing his contributions to education and STEM opportunity.

In 2018, he received the Evelyn Kamen Rising Star Award at a FIRST Robotics event. The other recipient that evening was former President Barack Obama.

These recognitions reflected a growing awareness of the importance of making STEM education accessible to communities that have historically been underrepresented in engineering and technology.

Beyond ELiTE: Educational Technology

Roebuck's interests have also extended into educational technology and entrepreneurship.

He was involved with dotLearn, an initiative designed to make digital education more accessible in West Africa, particularly in environments where internet access and data costs can be barriers to online learning.

The project developed technology for compressing educational video and making digital learning more accessible. Its mschool platform ultimately reached tens of thousands of users in Ghana and Nigeria.

The project illustrates another dimension of Roebuck's philosophy: technology itself is not enough. It has to be designed around the realities of the people who need to use it.

A Broader Vision of the Digital Future

Chelsey Roebuck's career sits at the intersection of several important movements:
